Why you need to see the Northern Lights...

The Northern Lights are an amazing phenomenon that top many people’s bucket lists, and they can be seen in a lot of destinations so you could easily tie in trying to spot them with your holiday plans.

Some of the best places to spot the Northern Lights, also called aurora borealis which means ‘dawn of the north’, are Iceland, Scandinavia, and Canada, which are all amazing holiday destinations that will ensure you have a great time whether you see the lights dancing around in the sky or not.

The Northern Lights are created by collisions between electronically charged particles from the sun, and although they go through a spectrum of colours, including pink, violet, blue, red and yellow, they are mostly green when we see them.

The lights appear in a range of shapes, such as arcs, patches, and rays, and can even sometimes look white-grey in colour which means that onlookers are not quite sure what they are looking at. However, if you are lucky enough to find them at the right time you will be mesmerised by a dazzling light show.

The best time to see the Northern Lights is from late September and early April between 6pm and 6am, and they will look best on a clear night. It is also helpful to head away from cities and into the country where it is darkest in order to see them.

If you are going on a trip with the hope of seeing the Northern Lights you might like to join a tour as the tour guides will know where you are most likely to see them. Many tours will also offer you the chance to take the tour again the following night if you are not lucky enough to see them during your first attempt.

Seeing the Northern Lights is an experience that will stay with you forever, and many people have made a hobby out of seeking them out in different countries, which just proves how amazing and stunning they are.
