Staycationing in Devon

Our long weekend in Devon in May 2017 began with a pit stop at Stonehenge on the way down. Always fans of learning more about our country’s history we found the walk around this historic site particularly fascinating.

After indulging in a little education, onwards we went to our destination – a quaint B&B overlooking a river in Tiverton. I would always recommend staying in an independent hotel or B&B as the service is always personal and you end up feeling like a part of the family by the time you leave.

On our first day in the county we embarked upon a visit to Torquay where we explored an underground ancient cave network and enjoyed lunch overlooking the English Riviera. Torquay is a beautiful town and well worth a visit if you find yourself in Devon – just watch out for Basil Fawlty!

The next day we undertook a sea safari in Ilfracombe. We were supposed to see a huge variety of sea animals; but given the time of year the only animals we spotted were a few birds and a seal lounging around on some rocks in the distance (it looked remarkably like a rock to me!). The boat ride on the Humber Rib was the most exciting part as we really picked up some speed. Ilfracombe is a lovely little town with plenty to see and do.

While down in this part of the country a drive through Dartmoor and Exmoor is simply a must. The views across both national parks are simply wonderful and the ponys make it extra special.

It’s a wonder when we have such beautiful scenery and a rich culture why so many people choose to go overseas for a holiday. I guess it must be a weather thing?
