How to Plan a European Road Trip

A European road trip offers an amazing opportunity to visit more than one country during your holiday as the EU's open borders allow you to travel freely, and you'll discover some stunning scenery along the way.

Europe boasts an excellent road network so you won't need to worry about getting lost as you travel from place to place, but there are still some things to consider when you plan a European road trip.

Should you hire a car or take your own?

Taking your own car to drive throughout your European road trip is an option if you travel via ferry rather than plane, and some people prefer this as they feel more comfortable driving a vehicle that they are used to when in a new place.

This can also be more convenient than hiring a car as it means that you can take more luggage with you and won't have to worry about moving it into a different vehicle once you arrive on the continent.

If you decide to hire a car for your European road trip it is important to check whether you need to be over 25 in order to do so, whether you will be charged extra to have a second insured driver, and if they will allow you to take the car to a number of countries.

How many places should you visit?

The number of places that you visit really depends on how long your holiday is going to be. Many countries in Europe have multiple borders so getting to a different destination is fairly quick, like driving from France to Belgium for example, so the best way to plan this is to use Google Maps or something similar to see how long each leg of your journey will take.

When should you travel?

We suggest taking your European road trip during May or September as the weather will be good but the roads and places that you visit will be less busy. Despite it not being peak season, you will also find that most attractions, hotels and restaurants will be open throughout these months.
